PRACTICAL GUIDE

A file that fits.
A result you checked.

An upload limit is a ceiling. Give your file a little room beneath it, then verify what you’re actually sending.

1. Check the receiving service.

Read both the size limit and accepted file types. A smaller HEIC file still won’t help if a form only accepts JPEG. Check whether the limit applies per file or to the whole upload.

2. Choose a useful target.

If your access level offers target-size compression, aim below the limit rather than exactly at it. Squooshy’s public listing describes 2, 5, 10, and 25 MB presets and custom sizes. The app shows the options available to you.

Targets are best effort. Very compact files may not shrink, and a source already below your target may remain unchanged.

3. Review size and content.

Compare the actual output size with the limit. Inspect image detail, play the video, or check important PDF pages. Byte reduction does not measure visual quality.

4. Save, then upload the result.

Use the compressed output when attaching or uploading. If the service still rejects it, check its type restrictions and total attachment limit before trying a smaller target.
